Background

The Energy Policy Act of 2005 changes the start and stop dates for Daylight Saving Time cVideo Products are affected!

On Monday August 8, 2005, President Bush signed into law a broad energy bill (Energy Policy Act of 2005) that will extend Daylight Saving Time by four weeks beginning in 2007. Clocks will be set ahead one hour on the second Sunday of March instead of the current first Sunday of April. Clocks will be set back one hour on the first Sunday in November, rather than the last Sunday of October.

Problem

Computer-based products that automatically change to Daylight Saving Time will not transition on the appropriate dates. Microsoft is not providing an update for the Windows 2000 operating systems to fix this problem. Although they will be providing an update at some point for Windows XP operating systems, the XP-embedded operating system does not automatically receive updates.

Solution

SYS Technologies' cVideo product group has developed an update to fix the problem that can be applied to both its Windows 2000 and Windows XP-embedded based products.

Dealers and Customers who do not have NetManager support in place can download the stand-alone executable file, TimeZoneUpdater.exe, from the link at the bottom of this page.

Dealers who do have support in place for NetManager will be provided separate instructions and authenticated CAB files that can be pushed to their deployed cVideo Video Servers.

Note: Systems shipped from SYS Technologies after February 1, 2007 will include this update already.

Implementation

To apply the update without NetManager support:

  1. Download the executable file (TimeZoneUpdater.exe)using the link at the bottom of this page.

  2. Log on to the cVideo Video Server as a user with Administrator privileges.

  3. Copy the update file to that system.

  4. Double-click the update file. The changes are automatically made.

Verification

To confirm the update has been applied correctly:

  1. Open the Windows Date/Time properties (double-click the clock in the System Tray).

  2. Click the Time Zone tab.

  3. Select US Pacific Time and compare the description to the options listed below.

The system has been properly updated if the description reads:

(GMT-08:00) Pacific Time (US & Canada)

The system has NOT been properly updated if the description reads:

Pacific Time (US & Canada); Tijuana

Ramifications

If the update is not applied, the system will continue functioning; however, the time will be off until the system switches to Daylight Saving Time on the traditional date the first Sunday in April.

Additional Information

The update can be applied to any Windows 2000-based system, including those obtained from sources other than SYS Technologies/cVideo. Microsoft reports that they will provide updates for the non-embedded versions of XP and other products through normal system updates, once they are available.
