SUPER BOWL 2003: SAFER WITH CVIDEO DIGITAL SURVEILLANCEThe ChallengeSecurity at the Super Bowl XXXVII at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego was at an all-time high. Providing a safe environment for players, fans, and a list of who is who among celebrities and politicians posed a tremendous challenge to federal and local authorities. Amid terror threats and the danger of an attack on a nearby gasoline storage facility, an all-encompassing and ever effective security system had to be put in place. In addition to closing off the airspace, controlling traffic around the stadium, and providing a massive force of security personnel, authorities had to have eyes in every corner in and around the stadium. The cVideo SolutionTeaming up with Electro Specialty Systems, cVideo was selected among a number of digital video surveillance technology companies to provide a sophisticated video solution. More than 50 cameras were installed in and around Qualcomm Stadium and were connected to multiple cVideo systems. Using the cVideo technology, any camera could be viewed by on-site FBI, NFL or security officers in a central control room, by off-site officers with network connections, and by mobile officers with wireless e-pads. As a result of cVideo’s superior compression technology and Qualcomm wireless technology used in combination with Verizon’s network, police officers in the parking lot were able to view the cameras on their mobile handheld devices, giving them the ability to effectively assess and respond to potential crisis situations. The ResultsUsing the cVideo technology, for the first time, members of the FBI, NFL, San Diego Police Department and stadium security had simultaneously access to video taken from all the cameras setup throughout Qualcomm Stadium. Bob Davis, San Diego police officer and technical director of the Super Bowl for the San Diego Police Department commented, “cVideo is giving us the server, back-end, and digital recording. The federal, city and state levels are coming together so all of us can see this video at the same time. When people have to make decisions, they’re actually seeing live, real-time video.” Al Sanchez, director of security for Qualcomm Stadium added, “I can go to any area of the property right away, and I can find out who’s who or what they are doing on the property.” cVideo received a certificate of appreciation from the San Diego Police Department for the company’s contributions to a safe, and successful Super Bowl XXXVII.
