QUEENS BOROUGH LIBRARY: FIGHTING LITIGATION WITH CVIDEO TECHNOLOGYThe ChallengeThe Queens Borough Public Library serves a book-hungry population of 2.2 million from 63 locations plus 6 Adult Learning Centers. It has circulated more books and other library materials than any other library system in the country since 1994, and is the second largest public library in the U.S. in terms of size and collections. Mike Daly is director of security at Queens Borough Library, employs a security staff of 25 and is responsible for 63 buildings. Back in 1999, Daly was faced with an increasing amount of false liability claims related to workmen comp or customer accidents and his expenditures for security guards were steadily growing. These demands were outgrowing what his analog video system at the time was able to provide in terms of video quality and capabilities. The cVideo SolutionAfter evaluating and testing several digital video systems by different manufacturers, Daly decided that cVideo provided him with the best product. Queens Borough implemented a total of 34 cVideo systems by the end of 2000 to replace the majority of their analog video recorders. Each system is connected to 16 cameras. In 2004, Queens Borough upgraded their current cVideo systems to cVideo’s latest Marathon technology. All systems are networked to provide Daly and his team with the ability to remotely monitor all of the library branches and remotely search and review recorded video. The ResultsThe cVideo technology provided Daly with the type of functionality he had sought. The enhanced image quality and watermarking of the video provided the necessary evidence to counter false court claims. Daly describes a recent success with the cVideo system in the following way: “A woman had filed a suit against us after falling on one of our stairways, claiming improper installation of handrails as the cause. The cVideo system allowed us to quickly find the video recorded of the incident and provided clear evidence that she had missed a step when walking down the middle of the stairway. The case was immediately thrown out of court after presenting the evidence.” Daly realizes additional benefits through operational cost savings, reductions in security guards and insurance premium reductions. The Queens Borough Public Library has also indicated that they will install cVideo technology in all their new branches.
