Eric Herndon is General Manager of Escape Snack Bar & Deli
at the Naval Station in San Diego, California. Herndon’s father
is a beneficiary of the Randolph-Sheppard Act, which was enacted by Congress
in 1936 to provide blind persons with remunerative employment, enlarge
their economic opportunities, and encourage their self-support through
the operation of vending facilities in federal buildings and properties.
In the fall of 2003, Herndon discovered that he had a serious shrinkage
problem. Specifically, Eric knew that at least one of his current employees
was stealing from him because inventory and sales calculations showed
enormous discrepancies. Further, Escape Snack Bar had become known as
the “rip off” store because the Navy sailors were shoplifting
merchandise during their time in port as if Escape’s offerings were
part of their benefit package.
After careful research and consulting with CRB Security,
Herndon selected cVideo as the next-generation security and loss prevention
system for his store. CRB Security installed the cVideo system in 2003,
providing the Escape Snack Bar with the ability to remotely monitor their
store operations, listen to audio in the back office or remotely, and
integrate with their point-of-sale system. cVideo has been working closely
with Escape’s point-of-sale provider to design a custom software
solution that would meet Herndon’s specific POS transaction related
requirements. 13 cameras were connected to the cVideo system to cover
every inch of Herndon’s 900 square feet store.
Herndon was pleased with the effectiveness of his new surveillance
system: “Within one week of installing the cVideo system, I caught
the employee who had been stealing up to $200 a day from me for months.” Eric
burned several CDs for both the Naval Criminal Investigation Services
and local law enforcement to provide evidence for the crimes of his employee,
who was also a Navy sailor and son of a Military Police officer.
As a result of installing the cVideo system, Eric states that he eliminated
virtually all employee theft and reduced shoplifting by about 50 percent.
The reputation of his store has changed from “rip off” store
to a place where thieves get caught, reported to the military chief, and
banned from the store or even thrown out of the Navy.
