E-Z MART: SAVING THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS A DAY WITH CVIDEO TECHNOLOGY

The Challenge

In 1970, when small-town America closed at 6 p.m., E-Z Mart Stores founder Jim Yates kept his first convenience store in Ashdown, Arkansas, open until 11. After riding the wave of convenience store growth, E-Z Mart now boasts over 400 outlets across the southern states of Arkansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas. Dale Sides is Vice President of Loss Prevention and Security at E-Z Mart and his main responsibilities are to ensure safety and minimize shrinkage across all 400 stores. Up to 2004, he had to use two different digital video systems at each of his stores. One was addressing his need for security by integrating with the alarm automation software used for Central Station Monitoring. The other was addressing his shrinkage problem by integrating with E-Z Mart’s point-of-sale system to provide transaction analysis and verification capabilities. As part of a technology refresh initiative, Sides was looking for a product that could offer these combined capabilities while providing an overall improvement to the surveillance technology used in his stores.

The cVideo Solution

Sides carefully evaluated and tested several products, including the latest product releases by the two systems he was currently using in his stores. In July of 2004, he asked Westec Interactive to install the first Remote Pro in one of his locations. The Remote Pro is a cVideo product that’s manufactured, branded, and custom designed by cVideo for Westec. The Remote Pro provides both Central Station and Point-of-Sale integration capability in one comprehensive security, loss prevention, and operational system. Using cVideo technology, Westec Interactive provides video and audio monitoring to E-Z Mart, including video alarm verification and monthly operational checks. E-Z Mart’s loss prevention staff and store managers use the Remote Pro’s point-of-sale data analysis and video tools to detect, verify, and document potential fraud or errors at the registers. In the following 6 months, the cVideo technology was deployed to 150 additional E-Z Mart locations replacing the two products that were previously needed with one.

The Results

E-Z Mart has been able to realize enormous efficiencies and cost saving by switching to the cVideo technology. Not only does one system provide E-Z Mart with what two systems did before, but also has the cVideo system provided additional benefits: After reviewing video from one of the cVideo sites for evidence in an attempted murder, the Oklahoma City Police Department stated that this was the best quality video they had ever received. Dale Sides stated that he was saving E-Z Mart thousands of dollars a day in shrinkage reduction through the effective use of cVideo technology. To put it in his own words: “cVideo’s product is the best system I’ve ever used.”
